Elapsed Time

 In Math today they worked in partners to solve different Math word problems around the room. They were taped to the wall etc. so it kept them moving while solving these problems. Some of them used a learning clock to help solve these. They also played 'Connect 4' to practice their multiplication skills. 

Example of elapsed time questions that you could try with them at home: 

Mrs. Craig went for a walk at 2:45pm. She walked for 1hr. and 15 minutes. What time did she get back at?

We had a basic facts quiz and I will hand these back tomorrow!

During mindfulness today they wrote about what makes them happy, angry, sad and excited. Some students shared their ideas with the class. 

We read a story about how crayons (Crayola) were first invented and made! It was very interesting. Ask your child what the process was! 

We also read a story about fire fighters and have a great classroom conversation about safety.

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
