Spring!

 Although today may not have felt like it..Spring is here! During our circle share time, we all shared what we are excited about with the new changing season. Most of us said: bike riding, no winter gear! and rollerblading. 

When we think of Spring we think of growth and change. For our writing assignment their question was: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" We talked about how this will likely change many times during their childhood, but it is fun to think about! We are going to be creating Spring pictures to go with our writing. 

Today is "World Poetry Day." We watched a live stream from CBE that had people reading and speaking about poetry. 

In Math we filled out and learned how to use multiplication tables. I saw so many light bulbs go on! Multiplying really is just skip counting!

Spelling words this week: 

Red: Spring, bring, sing, ring, king

Blue: poem, flower, growing, harvest, farming

Green: poetry, investigating, seasonal, gardening, sprouting 

This is our last week before Spring break!

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
