Paragraph Writing

 Today we learned about how to write a simple paragraph. We learned that it is just like a hamburger! The top bun is the topic sentence, the lettuce, tomato and burger are the reasons and supporting detail. Lastly, the conclusion sentence in the bottom bun. Everyone was able to write a paragraph with following this plan. Ask your child to write a paragraph for you! 

In math, they are all working hard to complete double digit by one digit multiplication equations. They could practice 5 questions at home each day to help gain this skill! 

In Science today they learned that soil is alive! There is a whole world of living creatures that live beneath our feet! They also read and answered questions about how soil supports living things. 

For Black History month, we learned about Wilma Rudolph! Ask your child who she is and all she accomplished. We also learned about Tommie Smith and John Carlos’s 1968 US national anthem protest. You can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ACXn-BDog8

Tomorrow I will be giving out cards to students for 'reading give it a shot.' Please bring your recording sheet.

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
