Quality of Life

Yesterday in Social Studies we did a class guided reading about Peru. We then ended our lesson on 'quality of life.' The learned that quality of life is: the sense of safety, comfort, security, health and happiness in your life. They then made a web chart of all of the things in their lives that affect their quality of life. Many of them wrote things like: water, clean air, healthy food, safety and shelter. Ask your child if they think their quality of life would be the same or different from a child who lives in Peru?

In Science we have been continuing to work on our posters about animals and hearing. They are learning about the top 10 animals with amazing hearing. To end off our hearing and sound unit I have given them a fun at home project. Please check their backpack for details. If you are unable to find time to create an instrument made from recycled material, please let me know and I will do it with them at school.

In Math we are working hard on understanding rounding. We slowly are getting into rounding to the nearest 100. Ask your child how they would round to the nearest 10 with the number 87 and 42.

They created a picture comprehension page on a white board today. Ask them what the silly book was about! ;)

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
