Telling Time

 This morning we started off with making words using only the letters from 'Halloween.' We thought of almost 20 different words. 

They wrote perfect sentences with their spelling test. As a class we discussed 'family words' that went along with some of the spelling words. We started with words that ended in ght. We then looked at our spelling words and spelt words that ended in _e and _at. We did a challenge: who could write a sentence using the most family words.

In Math we did a pop quiz! Ask your child what they found challenging. 

We worked on telling time today! Many students really understood this and can't wait to show off their new or relearned skill tonight. 

We completed a bar graph together today: Room 13's Favourite Colours. Ask your child why people use this method to collect data. How did we find the answer quickly when looking at our bar graph?

To end the day we watched a video about Alberta. Afterwards, we coloured a map of Alberta. 

Tomorrow is the last day before a 4 day weekend. We will have our spelling test tomorrow. :)

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
