Classifying

 We learned about a Science word today - "Classifying." Ask your child what it means and how Scientists use it to organize information and data. They read an article in pairs called "Life Science Stories" and answered multiplication questions on the back. 

They have been excited every morning to see where Elfie John is. This has been a great way to get them excited about journaling. The weird thing is, Elfie didn't move for 2 days! 

We did a guided drawing of a reindeer the other day. We used water colour to complete them. Afterwards, they created stories called "The Little Book of a Reindeer named ________." Ask your child what their book is about. 

I sent out a school messenger today regarding online schooling for the 4 days in January. Please reply back to me so I know how to organize those days. I will be sending home cards again with all of their login information. I will do this next week. 

We worked on secret projects today that included clay! They did a great job. 

In Math we completed 'Number Detectives' for Math review. 

At the end of the day we had silent reading as we were very chatty and needed some calm time.

 Ask your child who Chanie Wenjack is. We learned all about his story today and wrote about him in detail. We explained what happened to him and how it made us feel. We learned that this week is 'Secret Path Week." Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. Comprehension

We have been working on our comprehension strategies, to read and answer questions after listening to a text. Today we listened to a story called "The Shortcut" and answered 6 questions afterwards. All students were asked to go back and check their work, add as much detail as possible, and to reread the questions carefully.  We started a new class novel yesterday! Matilda is a wonderful story. Some students have listened to this story before, or have watched the movie, but that is ok. We talked about how great stories can be read more than once!  In Math, we continue to work on multiplication and division strategies. They are also working on double and triple digit subtraction and addition with borrowing and carrying.  In Science today they made posters on refraction and reflection.
