Gingerbread houses!

We had a blast today and I was so proud of my class and how they followed the rules. Not one person ate a candy! They are taking these home right now - hopefully they make it! We had a great time singing carols in the gym! Ask your child what their favourite song was. In Math, we played place value yahtzee. See you tomorrow for our last day of learning in 2019!!!

We started the morning off with Ignite. Ask your child what room they went to! We created something today that included our writing and drawing skills! You will see them soon. No spelling words this week! Last day of school for kids is Thursday (full day). We will be having our Pillars of Care assembly on Thursday.

Winter Trees

Image
We painted some beautiful winter trees today. Everyone did an awesome job persevering through this multi-step art activity! For our spelling test, they completed 5-6 sentences. I will hand these back on Monday. In Math we worked on rounding. Have a wonderful weekend! We are getting closer and closer to the number 18 for our ginger bread house activity. Please keep the candy and graham crackers coming.

Moral of a Story

We listened to a great story, read by Oprah Winfrey today, "Hula Hoopin' Queen." Ask your child what the story was about. We learned that stories have 'morals.'  We discovered the moral of our classroom novel "Fish In a Tree"  from chapter 22. Ask your child what the moral was and how the story unfolded. In Math, we built numbers using hundreds, rods and cubes. In pairs they studied a certain time of animal and wrote facts in their Science journals. What animal did your child study? What did they learn? We had iPad time today and went on Razkids. Remember to use this program at home too. Please check the school calendar for important dates! Winter break: No school December 20 - January 5 Classes resume January 6, 2020!

Owen and Mzee

This weeks spelling test will be focused on writing perfect sentences. Each group will be given 5 different sentences that they have to correct. I will send back their tests from yesterday, today. Please remember to study these words every week! We learned about a really special friendship today between a hippo and a tortoise. They may story maps and comics out of all of the different stages in the story. Ask your child about Owen and Mzee! In writing, they wrote about what animals they would be - if they could be one. Ask your child what 'Math talks' means to them. These were our questions today: 1. What number is between 36 and 38? (37) 2. What number is between 49 and 51? (50) 3. What number is one more than 96? (97) 4. I am thinking of a number between 40 and 50. This number has a 3 in it. What is the number? (43) 5. I am thinking of a number between 20 and 40. It has a 5 in it. What could be the numbers? (25, 35) You will soon be seeing a notice home about making

Successful Evening!

Every single family came out last night! That has never happened in my class, and it makes me so proud! Good job, room 13, those drummers were awesome. We have been very busy with our regular daily routines as well as practicing for last night. Today we will be watching division 2 all afternoon perform! They have been practicing their typing skills using games on the computer. In Math they are comparing numbers using less than, greater than and equal to. We have been looking at place value and comparing those numbers underlines. Ask your child to show you. We had 'free write' for almost 45 minutes. They could write about anything they wanted. Everyone was so engaged and had ideas to write about. We have really been enjoying about animals! Ask your child what they have learned so far. The spelling test is going to be pushed to Monday. Please study over the weekend!

Perseverance

Perseverance is our new monthly pillar. We brain stormed what it meant and shared times in our lives when things were hard, but we had to push through them! Some examples were: learning how to read and bike riding. We finished up our art for the concert today. Afterwards we made our own word searches. They loved this activity and wanted to bring them home to show you all. We can't wait to perform for parents on Wednesday. Please have your child come up to my class at 6. Concert starts at 630. Instruments due Wednesday - bring them tomorrow if you would like too. Spelling words: Red: tree, free, see, bee, Santa Green: December, mammals, traditions, research, concert Blue: decorations, studying, celebrating, researching, traditions

In Math, we are working on sorting numbers from least to greatest (and reverse) as well as less than and greater than. We had a pop quiz today! We did a guided drawing today. I will keep them a surprise for our winter concert. Please look over your childs spelling test and please get started on your instrument if you haven' already! Winter concert will be on Wednesday! We are looking forward to seeing all of our families! Students meet me in our classroom at 6 and parents head to the gym for the 630 start time.

Quality of Life

Yesterday in Social Studies we did a class guided reading about Peru. We then ended our lesson on 'quality of life.' The learned that quality of life is: the sense of safety, comfort, security, health and happiness in your life. They then made a web chart of all of the things in their lives that affect their quality of life. Many of them wrote things like: water, clean air, healthy food, safety and shelter. Ask your child if they think their quality of life would be the same or different from a child who lives in Peru? In Science we have been continuing to work on our posters about animals and hearing. They are learning about the top 10 animals with amazing hearing. To end off our hearing and sound unit I have given them a fun at home project. Please check their backpack for details. If you are unable to find time to create an instrument made from recycled material, please let me know and I will do it with them at school. In Math we are working hard on understanding roundin

Busy Monday!

We had a very busy Monday! Ask your child where the went for Ignite this morning. To start off the day they wrote 5-6 sentences on their weekends. They then shared these with a partner during snack time. In Science, we are moving towards our 'animal' unit. They each started a mini poster and completed a fact page of the 'top 10 animals with best hearing.' We learned some fascinating facts, ask your child! We have a couple more things to finish up and do before finishing up 'hearing and sound.' One will be at home and more details will come tomorrow! We have a new music teacher for 6 weeks! Congratulations to Mr. Wiens on his new baby! We had a big chat today about respect in the music room as our new teacher takes on a busy position with the winter concert! Reverse Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is reverse day! Teachers will dress like students and students will dress like teachers! We did our spelling test today and I will review those with you during parent teacher interviews on Thursday and Friday! Please book your interview if you haven't done so already. In Math we worked in pairs on double and triple digit addition questions. We are really enjoying our new novel study "Fish In a Tree." We worked hard today on our work for our 'display of learning' boards and can't wait for you to see them!

Novel Study

We started our new novel study today. The book is called "Fish In A Tree." So far it really makes us think about how we treat other people and what other people might be thinking and feeling. Everyone listened so well and seemed to really comprehend the first few chapters. We started our bulletin board project - I will say no more because you will be seeing them next week! I am away tomorrow, so I have told them that they will be getting their spelling test on Monday! I think a lot of them were relieved to have the extra weekend to study. We did our basic facts quiz today and had buddies. In Social Studies I showed them pictures of my trip to Peru! They seemed to really enjoy seeing them.

'Just Right' Book

We had a busy day back at school. We are doing a project for our bulletin board and need a perfect 'just right' book for everyone. This means: they understand what they read, enjoy it, and can read it independently. Many students have said that their book is at home. Please bring it to school tomorrow so we can begin our first steps! In Math we learned to expand a number to find the solution of an addition problem. For example: 66+22 can be expanded to: 60+20=80+6+2=88 Ask your child to show you this at home. We have learned the algorithm of carrying the one, but some students like this way better. In Science we learned about ECHOLOCATION! Ask your child what animals use this. We also learned about a person who is deaf who uses this. After P.E we completed a 4 piece comic drawing of what it means to be kind (which is our new pillar). Spelling Words: Red: one, two, three, four, five Green: twelve, twenty, thirty, fifteen, seventy Blue: five thousand, six hundred and e

Remembrance Day

We have been learning about Remembrance Day all week. Tomorrow we will have our ceremony and minute of silence in the gym. Please talk to your child further about respect during these ceremonies. Today we had an unexpected practice fire drill. Many of them did an awesome job, others had to talk to me afterwards about the importance of being silent during these practices. In Math we have been working on word problems and creating our own. We did a class guided reading today about a book on Peru. Many students were brave and read out loud to the entire class. We then wrote a paragraph in our Social Studies book about Peru. I am so proud of my class during buddy time. They are all so kind and patient towards their kinder buddies! Tomorrow we will be having our spelling test. Please study tonight!

Spread Kindness Like Confetti!

We learned a new game in gym today! Thank you to our student teacher (Mrs. P's class) for teaching us! We worked on goal writing today. Ask we what I wrote for COMPREHENSION and WELL-BEING. We need to write a NUMBER SENSE one tomorrow. When we are done all three we will enter these into our Iris accounts. Ask me to write me name in cursive writing! We learned how to do the lower and uppercase 'a' today. "Spread kindness like confetti." We are handing out kindness cards. Ask your child what we do with these. Kindness is our next 5th pillar for the month. To end off our day, we did a 'Number Talks.' They are given a Math problem, solve it independently, and then explain their strategy to the class. Ask your child if they explained theirs to the class. Spelling Words: We are working on rhyming words this week. Happy Halloween!

We had an awesome day today! To start off we created pumpkins from mandarin oranges! Then they went into pairs, made skits (plays) and presented to the class! Everyone was so brave and participated. Our POC ceremony was in the afternoon. Thank you to those parents that joined us in celebrating all of these awesome students. Be safe tonight if you are going trick or treating! ....and dress warm! No school tomorrow. See you on Monday.

Yes or No Questions!

We played a game today with the entire class. Mrs. Craig taped a character on our backs and we had to walk around asking yes or no questions to find out who we had! Ask your child who they had. This character was the beginning to our short story that we created afterwards. We did 'making words' with the word 'Halloween.' Our winner thought of 52 words! Word problem: Mrs. Craig handed out 16 pieces of candy. Mrs. P handed out double her amount. How many candies did Mrs. P hand out than Mrs. Craig? Ask your child to complete this with you. We are continuing to work on double digit addition with carrying.

Sugar Skulls!

We learned about how other people celebrate Halloween around the world - focusing on an interesting celebration - Day Of The Dead! We created beautiful sugar skulls using a guided sketch and then making it colourful with flowers and hearts. In Math we continued to focus on double digit addition with carrying. Ask your child to show you an example. Wow it is cold today! We had an indoor recess and lunch. Please dress for the weather! At the end of the day they wrote 5 perfect sentences on RESPECT. Ask your child what they wrote! We wrote our Science test today and got them back. Ask your child how they did. Did you study? Thursday is Halloween. Our school will be having an orange and black day. Pillars of care assembly at 1230. I have announced and sent home certificates today. Great job!  No school on Friday! No spelling words this week.

Go Flames Go!  Have a great weekend!

Science Experiments and Funny Pumpkins

Yesterday we had a day of Science! We physically saw how sound vibrates! All we needed was a spoon, a piece of yarn and a ruler! Maybe you could do this experiment at home and have your child show you. We did a basic facts test yesterday. Today we completed a math word problem together. They seemed to really enjoy coming up to the board and showing their way of thinking. Ask me what I have learned about Peru so far. Please check out our cute pumpkins on the stage tonight at the dance (6-8pm). Dress for the weather tomorrow as we will be going on our walk! Monday we will have a quiz on the parts of the ear. Please study from the print out sent home. We will have our spelling test at the end of the day tomorrow.

Alligator at School!?

We enjoyed reading 'Don't Bring An Alligator To School' this morning. In spelling we wrote 'perfect sentences' with our spelling words. Many of them are needing reminders of where to write on a page (some are writing in the middle of the book or on the right hand side only etc.). As an extension, we listed all of the 'ch' and 'sh' words we could think of. In Math we worked on our basic facts. We had a quick lesson on carrying in double digit addition. This made me realize that we will be spending much more time on this! You can practice at home too. Start with a simple equation of 37+43. After PE we had Health. We did a simple meditation exercise that worked really well for bringing down our hyper energy after gym and well - Mondays! In the letter they asked 3-4 questions and described the theme and food they would serve. Ask your child about their dinner party. In Math we have been focusing on graphing and mental math strategies for addition and subtraction. We created a chart together "What is Math?" They came up with many jobs that need Math and life skills where Math is needed. In writing we have also been learning how to write a 'perfect sentence using neat printing, spaces, capitals and periods. In the afternoon, in groups of 2, they created Pillars for our bulletin board. Ask your child: What is the 5th pillar? What are ways to deal with stress? What do you like to write about?

Monday!

This morning I read the story, "Invisible Boy." Ask your child what the story was about and how the author used colour to represent the emotions of the characters. We also made a poster about 'Belonging.' See you tomorrow for more learning and our first library visit!

A Great First Week

We had our first assembly today. It was around our new pillar. Each month there will be a different pillar. This month it is "belonging." Room 13 really showed their understanding of belonging by including everyone and showing kindness inside and outside the classroom. We enjoyed our Math lesson today on graphing. Ask your child what we graphed and what we concluded from the information we collected. They had 'free topic' writing time. Many students chose to write stories, others wrote about their interests and what they did during the summer. Ask your child what an adjective is. They each came up with an adjective that represents them. Remember to read every day at home. Even 10 minutes makes all of the difference! Have a great weekend and I look forward to more learning next week!

Day 2!

This morning we talked about personal space and respecting other people's 'bubble.' They created name tags for their coat hooks in order to help with space during transition times. We really enjoyed our task cards today on different situations that can and will happen in our classroom. Each group acted out their scenario and discussed the best reaction to the problem. Ask your child what their task card said. They painted self portraits today with unique patterned backgrounds! I will have these up for 'meet the teacher' night! Ask your child about their first music class.

First Day Jitters!

We had a fantastic first day of grade 3! With a few reminders, everyone was respectful and ready to learn. We started off the day reading the book "Classroom Jitters." Ask your child what happened at the end of the book! Who did the main character end up being? Please take the time to read your child's letter they wrote to you. In there you will find some details about what we did today. Please make sure your child comes to school with a healthy snack so we can eat in the classroom. Recess is only 10 minutes long and I want them to be active and play during that time. Indoor shoes without laces (unless they can independently tie their own!). You may send your child with a water bottle and a pencil case to keep at school too. Your child's take home folder is in their backpack. Forms are due by Friday. We will be painting tomorrow!
