Happy Halloween!

We had an awesome day today! To start off we created pumpkins from mandarin oranges! Then they went into pairs, made skits (plays) and presented to the class! Everyone was so brave and participated. Our POC ceremony was in the afternoon. Thank you to those parents that joined us in celebrating all of these awesome students. Be safe tonight if you are going trick or treating! ....and dress warm! No school tomorrow. See you on Monday.

Yes or No Questions!

We played a game today with the entire class. Mrs. Craig taped a character on our backs and we had to walk around asking yes or no questions to find out who we had! Ask your child who they had. This character was the beginning to our short story that we created afterwards. We did 'making words' with the word 'Halloween.' Our winner thought of 52 words! Word problem: Mrs. Craig handed out 16 pieces of candy. Mrs. P handed out double her amount. How many candies did Mrs. P hand out than Mrs. Craig? Ask your child to complete this with you. We are continuing to work on double digit addition with carrying.

Sugar Skulls!

We learned about how other people celebrate Halloween around the world - focusing on an interesting celebration - Day Of The Dead! We created beautiful sugar skulls using a guided sketch and then making it colourful with flowers and hearts. In Math we continued to focus on double digit addition with carrying. Ask your child to show you an example. Wow it is cold today! We had an indoor recess and lunch. Please dress for the weather! At the end of the day they wrote 5 perfect sentences on RESPECT. Ask your child what they wrote! We wrote our Science test today and got them back. Ask your child how they did. Did you study? Thursday is Halloween. Our school will be having an orange and black day. Pillars of care assembly at 1230. I have announced and sent home certificates today. Great job!  No school on Friday! No spelling words this week.

Community Walk

We had a fantastic morning in nature. Thank you to Miss Harmony for sharing a great story and teaching us something new! Ask your child what the story was about. Please review with your child, their spelling test. Next week I will make blue group a little less hard! Reading...Give it a Shot BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students have brought home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?  20 min read = 1 Flames hockey card.  Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! The reading competition starts now and ends early December.  T he more they read the more chance we have of the Calgary Flames visiting our school!    Thank you for your support and work with encouraging your child to read! Go Flames Go!  Have a great weekend!

Science Experiments and Funny Pumpkins

Yesterday we had a day of Science! We physically saw how sound vibrates! All we needed was a spoon, a piece of yarn and a ruler! Maybe you could do this experiment at home and have your child show you. We did a basic facts test yesterday. Today we completed a math word problem together. They seemed to really enjoy coming up to the board and showing their way of thinking. Ask me what I have learned about Peru so far. Please check out our cute pumpkins on the stage tonight at the dance (6-8pm). Dress for the weather tomorrow as we will be going on our walk! Monday we will have a quiz on the parts of the ear. Please study from the print out sent home. We will have our spelling test at the end of the day tomorrow.

Spooky Stories!

Our stories really took off today! They were allowed to write about any topic they wanted but many of them decided to write Halloween stories. So far we have had 2 people present their stories to the class and many that want to tomorrow! Many of them have written 2-3 pages with title pages! In Math we did a pop quiz on basic facts! We really enjoyed reading 'Amelia Bedelia' today and had a good laugh about her thinking. We started learning about our first country today - Peru! They loved watching the video about "going to school in Peru." This Thursday is the school Halloween dance! Please come dressed up! On Halloween our school will be doing 'orange and black day. Please check notice in your child's backpack!  The Grade 3s are going to go on a walking trip to Confluence Park this Friday morning. If you would like to volunteer please email me at lmparsons@cbe.ab.ca We will be leaving at 8:30am.

Alligator at School!?

We enjoyed reading 'Don't Bring An Alligator To School' this morning. In spelling we wrote 'perfect sentences' with our spelling words. Many of them are needing reminders of where to write on a page (some are writing in the middle of the book or on the right hand side only etc.). As an extension, we listed all of the 'ch' and 'sh' words we could think of. In Math we worked on our basic facts. We had a quick lesson on carrying in double digit addition. This made me realize that we will be spending much more time on this! You can practice at home too. Start with a simple equation of 37+43. After PE we had Health. We did a simple meditation exercise that worked really well for bringing down our hyper energy after gym and well - Mondays! We then had a great class discussion about different stresses we have in grade 3 and what we use to cope. Spelling words: Red: yellow, red, green, blue, boo! Green: candy, colour, spooky, sound, hearing Blue:

A Great Friday

In Science we learned how our brain receives messages from what we hear. This helps us stay safe and aware. Ask your child to give you an example. Have a fantastic weekend and cozy up with a book!

Zones of Regulation

We started the day of with Ignite! Ask your child what room they went to. In Health we learned about the 'Zones of Regulation.' This is familiar language for many of them, as they did this last year. They worked together in groups of 4 to create posters on the 4 different levels of emotions. Afterwards in their journals, they wrote complete sentences emotions and what makes them feel these (happy, sad, annoyed, angry, excited and shy). In Math we learned two new games. Ask them about 'Would You Rather?' With this, they are given 2 different picture that represent quantities of objects. They have to defend what they think is more. They played 'roll to 100' and practiced their basic facts. In Buddies they helped their buddies study pumpkins (wrote down their measurement, colours and textures). To end off our day we did a Science experiment with hearing and sound. They learned what 'pitch' means and how it is produced. Question: 'Does changing

We had a great day today and transitioned back into our routine (even after 5 days off!). Great job, room 13! Busy busy! We completed our Literacy SLA test today, completed a Math booklet on all different skills, and danced and had music! We will be using the same spelling words as last week, so please study those! There are 2 forms and Scholastic going home today. Make sure to pull them out of your child's backpack and read. After our busy day today, they earned free time! Ask your child what they explored.

Ask them what they wrote about for their writing test. We will have the same spelling words next week, since this week has been so busy and it is short, they seemed to agree! Wednesday they are back and it is 'crazy hair day!'

A Busy Monday

They also have their first basic facts test! Ask your child how they went. Our 5th pillar this month is RESPECT. As we still learn the routine and guidelines of our classroom, respect is the perfect pillar to have! Please talk to your child about how they react during different emotions they may have. Eg. a child bothering them or feeling frustrated over something that might be difficult. Spelling words: Red: add, be, cat, dog, see Green: said, school, adding, like, true Blue: Honesty, respect, organizing, hearing, migration Remember to read every night with your child.

We will be looking at each of these parts and understanding what their jobs are. Ask your child about vibrations and waves when it comes to hearing and sound. The last couple of days they have been working on water colour Fall trees. They have turned out beautiful. To follow, they created Fall poems. We logged on to computers today! Even though it took some patience, they were able to go onto Raz Kids. Everyone was so helpful with their buddies in kindergarten today. They taught their buddies about shapes and how to use them when making a self portrait. Tomorrow will be our second spelling test! Remember to study and to ask them 'what is a perfect sentence'?
