Jump Rope For Heart

An important message from Mrs. Sadowsky:  On Monday we will begin jump rope for heart which will run for the entire month of February. Students will be doing skipping and hula hooping in phys ed when they are with their classroom teacher to promote this. (They will be doing lacrosse when with Mr. Sadowsky) If they choose to fundraise this year, all donations will be made online. Due to COVID we can't accept cash or cheques. A parent letter will be coming home today or Monday which explains how they register online so they can collect donations through their account. We will collect donations from Feb 1st to Feb 28th. All prizes for collecting donations this year will be gift cards due to COVID and a list of prizes can be found on the website when they register. Anyone who raises a minimum of $20.00 will also be added to a draw for a bonus prize through our school. We have about 13 prizes to give away which include soccer balls, basketballs, skipping ropes and 1 mini hockey set whic

Fraction Codes

We have been continuing our learning with fractions. Yesterday they were given a 10x10 graph paper sheet. They created a picture through 8 different colours. They then wrote the fraction of each colour on the grid paper. For example, 5/100 - green. Afterwards they wrote the percentage beside the fraction. Grade 4 has started to learn about decimal points and added that as well. We had a class conversation about where we see percentages in our world? They had many great examples. Ask them what they contributed. Today they created codes with different fractions. They seemed to really enjoy this. Maybe they can show you an example at home! Yesterday and today we read Science articles about vertebrae and invertebrate animals. Afterwards they answered questions on the back.   In Language Arts we are talking about character traits. We made a classroom poster together about outer and inside traits of characters. We went around the classroom and each person had to say something about their ins

Division

Today we used the Ipads to research words for Science. This time the definitions were directed to animal life cycle. They also learned the difference between vertebrae and invertebrate animals.  I read them the story, "Piggie Pie!" in Language Arts today. The had to write about the plot in the journals (clear beginning, middle and end).  In Math today we started to learn and relearn about division. Everyone seems to have a clear understanding of dividing a number into equal groups. We used to chips to physically divide the number.  It was very cold today! We had 2 indoor recesses.  Spelling Words: Red: tell, sell, bell, yell, fell Blue: dozen, people, divide, grouping, event Green: division, creatures, representation, appetite, visualization

Story Elements

The past couple of days we have been examining during pictures books and looking for specific story elements. The students used graphic organizer to find the plot, characters, problem, theme and setting. Ask your child what they thought the theme was in the story, "Balloon Tree." Yesterday we created 'fraction friends.' These were sent home as they were excited to show them to their families.  In writing we have been working on adding detail to the subject to gain further interest from our audience.  In Social Studies today we finished up our "Regions of Alberta" posters.  Report cards will be available on Power School in February. More information coming next week!

Comprehension

During our class novel study today I had them draw an event in the story that really stuck out to them. We talked about the meaning of 'comprehension' and how without this reading piece, it takes away the purpose of reading.  We made a class poster today of things we love about ourselves. Ask your child what they said. I loved hearing things like 'because I am unique', 'because my culture is interesting.' In Math today they were given fractions. They had to independently draw a shape to divide it into the fraction given.  Spelling words:  red: how, wow, now, if, is blue: phrase, simple, detail, support, describe green: description, direction, comparison, explanation, sentences

Light and Shadows

This morning we started off our morning by taking the tape off of our winter art pieces. We then glued our poems and paintings on a piece of paper. They look fantastic!  We then moved onto Science and completed our "Light and Shadows' posters. We had one group represent their posters to the class afterwards. They sure had a lot of information to share! Ask your child what they have learned so far. Why are the size of shadows different sizes depending on the time of day? We completed our spelling tests today. I will hand them back tomorrow and give them their new words.  In Math we continued with fractions. Please have them show you the bingo game we played, as well as the worksheet of 'Among Us' fraction characters. We starting to learn about mixed fractions.  In health and mindfulness we talked about anger. Some questions were, do you show your anger differently towards people at school and people at home? Why? What are some strategies you use to deal with these stro

Birch Trees

We had an awesome Friday today. They started off with finishing up some work - fireworks writing and winter poems. We then went for a community walk for P.E. Afterwards they used tape to create birch trees on colour diffusing paper. We loved mixing our Science brain cells with our artist brain cells ;)! We used salt with water and water colours to create snow. They also challenged each other on Mathletics after they were done.  At the end of the day we earned a special project with Miss Kim (our Educational Assistant). She taught us how to make origami!  Since we had such a busy week, I have decided to extend our spelling test to Monday. This gives everyone time to study over the weekend!  Enjoy your weekend!

Busy Learning

We have been very busy in room 13 learning about fractions, lights and shadows, animal adaptations and countries around the world (and how they relate to the quality of life in Alberta)!  They also enjoyed creating some art for New Years. They started off by writing about their goals and things they look forward to for 2021. Some of them wrote 6 pages worth of ideas! To go with this writing, they created fire work art pieces. We will be putting these on display in our classroom.  Fractions seem to really be clicking in everyone's brains this week! We have been playing bingo and even made our own fraction kits. To make the fraction kits they started off with 6 equal strips. Each strip was then cut into: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6 and we kept one as a whole. This allowed them to see and understand that all fractions are equal part of a whole.  In Science we worked with computers to look up definitions or words such as: light, shadow, translucent, transparent, opaque and more. Today we

We Are Back!

We are happy to be back at school. In the morning they started off with writing and drawing their favourite memory of 'Winter Break 2020." We then made a circle with our chairs and shared them as a class. Ask your child what they said.  In Math today we worked with the number 2021! Many students came up with some very creative ways to represent this number! Maybe they can give you an example at home.  In Science we started a new unit: Lights and Shadows. To begin, they wrote down on sticky notes for our class poster, what they already know about these 2 things. They then wrote down definitions from the board about each of them. We will also be continuing with animals.  We started a new novel today! It is called "Look Out For The Fitzgerald Trouts."  Spelling words this week:  red: sun, fun, run, the, see blue: stories, setting, problem, middle, plot green: characters, fractions, resolutions, translucent, opaque See you tomorrow! : )

See you Monday!

I had a great week of online learning. I  assigned extra tasks for those who were done early. Please don't stress if you haven't completed everything in our Google Classroom. Have a great weekend and I will see you IN CLASS on Monday morning! :)

Day 1 of Online Learning

Happy New Year, everyone! I thought our first day of online learning went smoothly! Please remember to email me with any questions: lmparsons@cbe.ab.ca If you are working and your child is in daycare, please let me know. We can all only do what we can! If they can do some work in the evening from our Google Classroom, that would be great!  Homework is also reading for 30 minutes a day! Cozy up on your sofa with some hot chocolate.  We have a daily meeting at 10am and an optional meeting at 11:30 for questions or concerns. Please see below for our full schedule this week.  See you tomorrow at 10!
